National Coffee Day

We're celebrating National Coffee Day (Friday, Sept. 29) South Dakota-style with a few fun stats.

South Dakotans can get their coffee fix in a number of ways, from brewing their own at home to enjoying it with a sit-down meal at a restaurant and from getting a self-served cup at their local convenience store to hitting their favorite drive-through coffee place on their way to work. Using the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), we identified three industries in South Dakota we consider directly related to coffee.

  • All Other Specialty Food Retailers (NAICS 445298), including those who sell coffee beans and/or ground coffee for home brewers with distinctive tastes. This industry also includes retailers who sell specialty foods such as cheese and special dietary foods.
  • Mobile Food Services (NAICS 722330), including those specializing in coffee and coffee-based beverages. This industry includes those who sell other types of food and beverages; think food trucks in general.
  • Snack and Nonalcoholic Beverage Bars industry (NAICS 722515). This industry includes a wider variety of beverages than coffee-based ones as well as snacks, such as smoothie and ice cream shops.

This Snack and Nonalcoholic Beverage Bars industry is the largest of the three. It has grown substantially in South Dakota over the last five years, as shown in the table and line graph below. The number of establishments has increased by almost 53% while employment has grown by more than 80%.

South Dakota
Snack and Nonalcoholic Beverage Bars
Year Number of Establishments Employment
2018 157 1,494
2019 166 1,597
2020 167 1,638
2021 209 2,190
2022 240 2,724

As mentioned above, this industry includes more than coffee shops, so not all of the growth can be attributed to support from the state's coffee connoisseurs. But if you live in one of the state's bigger towns or cities, chances are, you can think of at least one or two new businesses in the last few years which are primarily known for coffee. So continue to caffeinate, coffee drinkers; you're helping support South Dakota's economic growth.

If you can't seem to get enough of the aroma of coffee, have you ever thought of being a barista? Check out SDWORKS; there are currently multiple job opportunities across the state for this unique 'coffee artist' occupation.
