NAICS Sector 51
The Information sector had a small drop of 10 workers (0.2%) from 2023 to 2024, declining for the second consecutive year. The average annual wage rose $1,578 (2.3%) from $68,104 in 2023 to $69,682 in 2024. Two of the six subsectors in the Information sector had gains in worker levels, and five subsectors had growth in annual wages from 2023 to 2024.
Information sector establishments are engaged in print publishing, software publishing, motion picture and sound recording, broadcasting, telecommunications, internet service providing, data processing, and a host of other information services. Advancements in technology such as artificial intelligence (AI) have streamlined many processes, allowing some establishments to expand services while keeping staffing levels stable. Advances in AI have improved customer service as systems are able to answer questions or troubleshoot issues online, reducing human workload.
The Computing Infrastructure Providers, Data Processing, Web Hosting, and Related Services (NAICS 518) subsector increased by 31 workers (8.6%) from 2023 to 2024. This subsector added nine establishments in 2024, reaching 309. Establishments within this subsector typically have low employment levels. Average annual pay increased $1,027 (1.0%), jumping to $104,875 in 2024. Media streaming technical support services, web hosting, and computer data storage services are examples of establishments included in this subsector.
Web Search Portals, Libraries, Archives, and Other Information Services (NAICS 519) had the highest average annual pay in 2024. Average annual pay increased $1,345 (1.2%), reaching $116,806 in 2024. This subsector’s employment level decreased by nine workers (11.3%). The main components of this subsector are libraries, archives, and web search portals.
Telecommunications (NAICS 517) decreased by 21 workers (0.9%). With a total of 2,443 workers in 2024, the Telecommunications subsector accounted for 47.6% of the workforce in the Information sector in 2024. Losses in the Telecommunications subsector occurred primarily in Wired and Wireless Telecommunications (except Satellite). Annual pay increased to $78,960 in 2024, up $1,653 from the year prior. Wired broadband internet service providers, cellular telephone services, and telecommunication resellers are some examples of the establishments in this subsector.
