NAICS Sector 51
The Information sector is composed of establishments engaged in publishing, software publishing, motion picture and sound recording, broadcasting, telecommunications, web hosting, data processing, and all other information services. The 'information economy' of our world includes both the concept of industries primarily producing, processing, and distributing information, as well as the trend of industries using available information and information technology to increase productivity.
The Information sector had a loss of 94 workers (1.8%), dropping to 5,139 workers in 2023. Losses are a result of declines in Publishing Industries and Telecommunications. Despite a drop in workers, this sector added 56 establishments. The average annual wage rose $3,860 (6.0%). This sector went from an annual wage of $64,244 in 2022 to $68,104 in 2023. Two of the six subsectors in the Information sector had gains in worker levels, and five subsectors had growth in annual wages from 2022 to 2023.
The Publishing Industries (NAICS 513) average annual pay increased $10,271 (18.3%), jumping to $66,283. This subsector had a loss of 78 workers (8.7%) from 2022 to 2023. Newspaper publishers, book publishers, software publishers, and magazine publishers are examples of establishments included in this subsector. The publishing landscape has continued to evolve due to advances in technology. As consumer preference changes from traditional print to digital, establishments adjust their workforce to match demand.
Telecommunications (NAICS 517) had a loss of 56 workers (2.2%). The annual pay increased to $77,307 in 2023, which is an increase of $3,163 from the year prior. Wired broadband internet service providers, cellular telephone services, and telecommunication resellers are some examples of the establishments in this subsector. Technology advancements have simplified processes, helping some establishments expand services while making modest cuts to their workforce.
The Computing Infrastructure Providers, Data Processing, Web Hosting, and Related Services (NAICS 518) subsector gained 23 workers (6.8%), reaching 359 workers in 2023. This subsector had 301 establishments in 2023. Establishments within this subsector typically have low employment levels. Average annual pay rose by $3,965 to $103,848, an increase of 4.0%. Media streaming technical support services, web hosting, and cloud storage services are examples of establishments included in this subsector.
