Manufacturing

NAICS Sectors 31-33

The Manufacturing sector’s employment level increased by 202 workers (0.4%) to reach a total of 45,303 in 2023. Manufacturing establishments are engaged in the mechanical, physical or chemical transformation of materials, substances, or components into new products. Businesses are involved in durable and nondurable goods manufacturing. Durable goods are those with a normal life expectancy of three or more years. These items typically consist of higher dollar products, such as machinery, furniture, building materials, and electronic equipment. Non-durable goods generally have a normal life expectancy of less than three years and include such items as food, beverages, clothing, and paper products.

There were 10 Manufacturing subsectors that showed employment gain during 2023. The subsectors are listed in order of actual worker gain:

  • Plastics and Rubber Products Manufacturing (NAICS 326): 167 workers (10.3%)
  • Fabricated Metal Product Manufacturing (NAICS 332): 148 workers (3.6%)
  • Machinery Manufacturing (NAICS 333): 103 workers (1.7%)
  • Transportation Equipment Manufacturing (NAICS 336): 75 workers (2.0%)
  • Chemical Manufacturing (NAICS 325): 71 workers (6.2%)
  • Electrical Equipment, Appliance, and Component Manufacturing (NAICS 335): 56 workers (13.4%)
  • Nonmetallic Mineral Product Manufacturing (NAICS 327): 18 workers (1.1%)
  • Beverage and Tobacco Product Manufacturing (NAICS 312): 10 workers (3.1%)
  • Paper Manufacturing (NAIS 322): 6 workers (0.9%)
  • Printing and Related Support Activities (NAICS 323): 3 workers (0.2%)

Eight of the 20 subsectors saw decreased worker levels in 2022:

  • Furniture and Related Product Manufacturing (NAICS 337): -154 workers (6.9%)
  • Miscellaneous Manufacturing (NAICS 339): -99 workers (2.0%)
  • Wood Product Manufacturing (NAICS 321): -66 workers (3.1%)
  • Computer and Electronic Product Manufacturing (NAICS 334): -54 workers (2.3%)
  • Food Manufacturing (NAICS 311): -40 workers (0.4%)
  • Textile Product Mills (NAICS 314): -36 workers (5.6%)
  • Primary Metal Manufacturing (NAICS 331): -two workers (0.3%)
  • Apparel Manufacturing (NAICS 315): -one worker (2.1%)

Employment levels in two of the 20 subsectors remained unchanged in 2023:

  • Leather and Allied Product Manufacturing (NAICS 316): 0 workers (0.0%)
  • Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing (NAICS 324): 0 workers (0.0%)

Not included in the employment loss/gain lists was Textile Mills (NAICS 313). This subsector had no reported establishments or employment in 2023. Establishments in the Textile Mills subsector transform a basic fiber into a product, such as yarn or fabric that is further manufactured into usable items such as apparel, sheets, towels, and textile bags for individual or industrial consumption.

As noted above, the Plastics and Rubber Products Manufacturing sector had the largest employment growth within Manufacturing in 2023. These manufacturers make goods by processing plastics and raw rubber. Manufacturers using either of these materials are grouped together because plastics are increasingly being used as a substitute for rubber. The subsector is generally restricted to the production of products made of just one material, either solely plastics or rubber. Examples of such products are unlaminated plastics film and sheets, polystyrene foam, plastic pipe, pipe fittings, and plastic bottles.

The 2023 annual pay for the Manufacturing sector was $61,351, an increase of 3.9% compared to the 2022 level of $59,036. Annual pay increased in 16 of the 20 manufacturing subsectors. The five with the largest percentage increase are listed below.

  • Apparel Manufacturing (NAICS 315): $11,243 (32.9%)
  • Textile Product Mills (NAICS 314): $4,383 (9.3%)
  • Computer and Electronic Product Manufacturing (NAICS 334): $4,143 (8.5%)
  • Leather and Allied Product Manufacturing (NAICS 316): $1,542 (8.4%)
  • Machinery Manufacturing (NAICS 333): $4,212 (6.9%)

While most of the Manufacturing sector had an increase in annual salary, annual pay fell in four subsectors:

  • Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing (NAICS 324): $28,727 (21.0%)
  • Furniture and Related Product Manufacturing (NAICS 337): $2,409 (4.3%)
  • Paper Manufacturing (NAIS 322): $977 (1.4%)
  • Beverage and Tobacco Products Manufacturing (NAICS 312): $72 (0.3%)
