South Dakota Electrical Commission

The South Dakota Electrical Commission works to keep the citizens of our state and their property safe from the hazards associated with using electricity. The Commission administers the state laws and regulations concerning electrical wiring, inspects wiring installations, investigates complaints related to electrical wiring and licenses all electricians within the state.

The Commission, a unit of state government, should not be confused with the South Dakota Electrical Council, which is a non-profit organization supporting the electrical industry in South Dakota.

Current Status of Commission

At this time the Commission is prepared to continue inspections for those requesting an inspection. Our scope is very limited, yet we feel it is important to keep projects moving for those who are requesting to do the same. Please note the installer ultimately decides when to call to request an inspection, but an installation is required to have the required inspections in order to receive a green sticker. If you have any concerns with COVID-19 or the safety of your installers, you may delay the inspection. Please also note the Inspectors have been educated on COVID-19 and precautions to reduce the risk of spreading it. Please also contact your inspectors to get them into residences before they are occupied or installations that are not occupied at this time.
