How to Become a Registered or Licensed Home Inspector in South Dakota
Registered Home Inspector
Applicants interested in becoming a Registered Home Inspector must complete a minimum 40 hour pre-licensing course. View our list of preapproved Home Inspector pre-license courses. Once the pre-license course is completed, applicants will need to take the Home Inspector examination. View our home inspection examination study guide and learn how to contact PSI to schedule the exam. After successfully passing the Home Inspector examination, candidates will be eligible to apply as a Registered Home Inspector, by submitting the proper application.
Licensed Home Inspector
A registered Home Inspector who has been employed at the registered level for no less than one year and performed at least 100 home inspections for compensation can upgrade the license to Licensed Home Inspector by submitting a completed Experience Log Experience Log (Adobe PDF format) to the South Dakota Real Estate Commission.
Note: Once licensed, there is no distinction between the duties and responsibilities of a licensed home inspector and those of a registered home
