Services for Veterans


Specialized Services for Eligible Veterans and Eligible Persons

Eligible veterans and eligible persons may be able to receive services from a specially trained Veteran’s Specialist. Contact your nearest South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation local office to see if you qualify for these additional services according to the criteria below.

Qualifying as an Eligible Veteran

To receive specialized services you must have served on active duty for:

  • More than 180 days and have been discharged or released without a dishonorable discharge, or
  • At least one day and have been discharged or released because of a service-connected disability, or
  • At least one day and have been called to active duty under Title 10 during a period of war, or
  • At least one day in a campaign for which a campaign badge is authorized, or
  • Discharged or released from active duty by reason of a sole survivorship.
  • AND be identified as experiencing a Significant Barrier to Employment (SBE)

Qualifying as a Disabled Veteran

  • A veteran who is entitled to compensation (or would be entitled if you were not getting military retired pay), or
  • A person who was discharged or released from active duty because of a service-related disability.

Qualifying as a Special Disabled Veteran

  • A veteran who is entitled to compensation (or would be entitled if you were not getting military retired pay) for a disability rated at 30 percent or more, or
  • A person who was discharged or released from active duty because of a service-related disability.

Qualifying as an Eligible Person

You must be the spouse of:

  • A person who died of a service-related disability, or
  • Any active duty member of the Armed Forces who, at the time of application for assistance, has been listed for 90 or more days as
  •  
  • Missing in action, or
  • Captured in the line of duty by a hostile force, or
  • Forcibly detained or interned in the line of duty by a foreign government or power.
  • Any person who has a total permanent disability resulting from a service-related disability, or
  • A veteran who died having a total permanent disability resulting from a service-related disability.

Veterans receive priority of service at DLR local offices and are given priority in DLR training programs.
