Celebrating National Ice Cream Month with some cool stats

In celebration of National Ice Cream Month in July, we scooped up a few related labor market stats.

• The United States had 869 Ice Cream and Frozen Dessert manufacturers in 2023. They employed nearly 25,000 workers and paid more than $1.4 billion in wages, with average annual pay of $56,362.

Although South Dakota does not have any manufacturers in this industry specifically, we do have substantial business activity related to the celebrated frozen treat.

• South Dakota was home to over 250 Snack and Nonalcoholic Beverage Bars (including ice cream parlors and stands) in 2023; they employed more than 2,800 workers and paid out nearly $48.5 million in wages.
• We had six Dairy Product Merchant Wholesalers in the state in 2023, employing 34 workers and paying $867,395 in wages.
• Are you hearing the music of an ice cream truck in your head yet? Not to be forgotten, there were 24 such Mobile Food Services in the state in 2023 (including ice cream trucks); they employed almost 200 workers and paid almost $4.4 million in wages.
