South Dakota Cosmetology Commission
Eyelash Extensions, Electric File and Microdermabrasion Education
Effective July 3, 2017, cosmetologists or estheticians who perform eyelash extension services must receive 16 hours of training and have eyelash extension services added as a certification on their cosmetology or esthetician license. Licensees currently performing eyelash extensions need not stop working. Simply send proof of your previous eyelash extension training and the certification will be added to your license. If you have any questions about becoming certified, please contact the Commission office at 605.773.6193. The Commission will be reviewing applications for pre-approved providers at their September 21, 2017 meeting. We will update this page to include any schools, companies, or licensees who become approved to provide 16 hours of eyelash extension training.
The South Dakota Cosmetology Commission requires education prior to performing eyelash extension services, using a microdermabrasion machine or electric nail file. These are one-time educational requirements. Documentation must be sent to the Commission immediately upon completion of any course. A $35 verification fee must be paid by the licensee to the Commission if the education provider is not approved by the Commission. The providers on the list below are approved providers for South Dakota licensees, so the licensee does not have to pay the $35 verification fee to the Commission.
- Performing eyelash extensions requires 16 hours of training, which must be completed before performing the service. Performing microdermabrasion (closed-loop system) requires 16 hours of training, which must be completed before starting the service.
- Using electric files requires eight hours of training, and licensees must complete the electric file course before using the electric file.
- If a licensee does not complete the education requirement and continues the service, the license may be suspended or revoked.
The Commission is not responsible for any course dates, rescheduled courses, cancelled courses or fees paid to the provider.
