PUBLIC NOTICE: Fraudulent Communications Impersonating the South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation (Oct. 20, 2026)

The South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation (DLR) is aware of fraudulent communications in which bad actors are impersonating DLR in an attempt to target individuals involved with licensing services.

At this time, there is no indication that DLR systems have been compromised. The fraudulent activity involves unauthorized parties using DLR's name and likeness to attempt to deceive members of the public.

DLR is working closely with the Bureau of Information and Telecommunications (BIT), cybersecurity partners, and law enforcement agencies to investigate the activity and pursue appropriate mitigation measures.

How to Protect Yourself
Citizens are encouraged to:

  • Be cautious of unsolicited emails, text messages, or phone calls claiming to be from DLR.
  • Do not click on links or open attachments from suspicious messages.
  • Verify any licensing-related requests by contacting DLR through official channels.
  • Never provide passwords, financial information, or sensitive personal information in response to unsolicited communications.
  • Report suspected phishing attempts to DLR and local law enforcement if personal information has been disclosed.

If You Receive a Suspicious Message
If you receive a communication that appears to be from DLR but seems suspicious, do not respond or click any links. Instead, contact DLR directly through its official website or published contact information to verify the request.

DLR will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
