Starting on Monday, April 29, 2024, the BoTP web portal will be unavailable as we work through the final stages of launching a new and improved licensee portal. If you need to renew your licensee while the system is down, please call the office at 605.394.2510 for assistance to avoid reinstatement charges. Check this website often for updates.

Business Licenses

Business Certificate of Authorization

Any business entity which offers and provides these professional services on projects located in South Dakota must obtain a certificate of authorization from the Board. A business entity is defined in the Blue Book (covering South Dakota Codified Law (SDCL) 36-18A-1(8)). For pertinent laws concerning business entities and certificates of authorization, see the Blue Book (covering SDCL 36-18A-48 through 36-18A-53). Any licensee who offers and provides these professional services on projects located in South Dakota must be included under a business certificate of authorization, unless said licensee is employed by an exempt entity. To obtain a certificate of authorization, the business entity must employ one or more professionals licensed in South Dakota in the same field of practice.

Certificate of Authorization from Secretary of State is also Required

In addition to the certificate of authorization from the Board of Technical Professions, any business entity which offers and provides professional services located in South Dakota should contact the Secretary of State office to inquire if a certificate of authorization is required through that office also.
