Future Workforce Finder Connects Students and Businesses

Students and businesses across South Dakota have a new way to connect thanks to the Future Workforce Finder, an online matching system launched recently by the Department of Education (DOE) and the Department of Labor and Regulation (DLR).

Supporting career and college readiness with work-based learning efforts helps reach the goal of attracting future employees while allowing students to explore careers and make informed choices.

Businesses can help align classroom learning with on-the-job learning by:

  • Providing a range of experiences that include career awareness and exploration to career preparedness
  • Encouraging students to develop professional relationships with industry and community leaders
  • Ensuring students receive monitored experiences with evaluated feedback
  • Offering career guidance and coaching, general academic and educational guidance, and professional growth support to students
  • Offering career immersive experiences for students that mimic, as closely as possible, real-world workplace experiences.

This first phase of the launch focuses on business and industry. Interested South Dakota employers can now go to weekofwork.sd.gov and click on the Future Workforce Finder button to create a profile.

Later this year, educators will be able to begin using the system to make connections between students and employers.

Partner with DLR to Help Justice-involved Individuals Successfully Re-Enter Their Communities

Around 3,000 individuals are released annually from the South Dakota prison system. Securing sustainable employment as they reintegrate into the community is key to their future success. Through the Federal Bonding Program, DLR can purchase federal bond insurance policies up to $25,000 that protect the employer in the case of any loss of money or property due to employee dishonesty.

Other ways to assist justice-involved individuals with a successful re-entry into their communities include:

  • Partnering with DLR to offer part-time, paid work experiences for justice-involved individuals to gain experience.
  • Partnering with DLR to provide on-the-job training which reimburses employers 50% of a justice-involved individual’s wages for an established training period. Employers can refer potential employees to DLR, but the individual needs to be established in our program before they start the job.
  • Building an environment that is supportive and nurturing. Consider building workplace mentorships through the StartTodaySD Mentorship Toolkit.
  • Providing flexible schedules which allow employees attend required meetings.
  • Seeking a Work Opportunity Tax Credit that offers a tax credit to employers. Individuals can register with our Job Service offices.

The graphic above reflects a small fraction of the advice provided to students by leaders in agriculture, business, public service, education and human services, science and healthcare, and manufacturing and construction.

The recorded panel discussions and videos are available on the South Dakota Week of Work website.
