Labor Department Accepting Unemployment Claims from School Employees Affected by COVID-19 Closures

The Department of Labor and Regulation (DLR) is accepting reemployment assistance (unemployment insurance) claims from school employees who are not able to work due to COVID-19 closures.

South Dakota schools will stay closed through March 27 as a precaution to slow the spread of COVID-19. If the worker is not being paid by the employer while at home, the worker may be eligible for unemployment benefits. Eligibility will be determined on a case-by-case basis.

The Department of Labor and Regulation (DLR) is asking employers filing unemployment insurance information to sign up for the State Information Data Exchange System (SIDES) e-Response. SIDES e-Response is a fast, secure and standardized way to automate responses to notices of unemployment claims.

  • COVID-19: Reemployment Assistance Eligibility Determination This page consists of proposed scenario interpretations regarding Reemployment Assistance eligibility. Many variables can affect a worker’s eligibility and an employer’s liability for reemployment assistance (unemployment insurance) benefits.
  • Worker's Compensation Coverage and COVID-19. Information regarding when COVID-19 may be compensable under Workers' Compensation.
  • DLR's COVID-19 Resources. This page includes a list of information and web pages regarding the virus, including links to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Johns Hopkins Center for Science and Engineering (interactive map) the World Health Organization (WHO) and South Dakota Department of Health (SDDOH).
