ADA Employment Videos Released by DLR

The first video is perfect for employers to share with their employees during the on-boarding process. It briefly explains protections under the ADA and expectations for communicating a disability. It also provides etiquette tips when working with or providing services to those who have a disability.

The second video covers pre-employment considerations. It shows employers how to improve hiring practices and allow for the inclusion of individuals with disabilities in the applicant pool. It also provides an overview of the ADA and tips on how to abide by the ADA during the hiring process.

The third video features considerations during employment. This essential employer resource reviews how to accommodate and retain new or existing employees with disabilities in accordance to the ADA.

Labor Department Awarded $847,000 to Expand Apprenticeships

Free USERRA Training for Employers

Funding will be used to expand the number of pre-apprenticeships and Registered Apprenticeships in South Dakota. Businesses may apply for up to a maximum of $30,000 in funding to help offset the initial start-up costs when developing a new program.

Priority will be given to programs offering training in information technology, healthcare, advanced manufacturing, business services, hospitality, utilities and agriculture. Programs designed to increase engagement for under-represented populations such as females, Native Americans, limited-English proficient individuals, youth ages 16 to 24 and individuals with disabilities will also be given priority.

The Rapid City Area Chamber of Commerce, South Dakota Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, and the Federal Department of Labor, Veterans’ Employment and Training Service invite employers to attend USERRA Training.

The 90-minute USERRA training is an in-depth presentation with useful reference material and information, all designed to pro-actively address any military service related issues concerning seniority, pay, vacation, promotion, disability, status, discrimination, benefits, discharge.

Two sessions are being offered at the Rapid City Chamber of Commerce Board Room #208 at Rushmore Plaza Civic Center, 444 Mt. Rushmore Road N.

Wednesday, Aug. 22 from 11:30 – 1:00 MDT (free lunch provided). Register.
Wednesday, Aug. 22 from 3:00 – 4:30 MDT (light snacks served). Register.

Employer Participation Needed in
Employee Benefits Survey

If you have been contacted by the Labor Market Information Center (LMIC) either by mail or email about an Employee Benefit Survey, please know it is a legitimate DLR survey and consider participating. South Dakota employers are the only source of state-specific employee benefits information. The survey sample was scientifically selected so results will be reflective across all major industry sectors and employer size classes.

Survey items cover the following benefits:

Insurance (Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, Disability)

Retirement

Paid Leave (Vacation, Sick, Holiday, Consolidated)

Although participation in the survey is voluntary, a good response rate is critical to LMIC being able to provide high quality South Dakota information to employers, economic developers, job seekers, career planners and others on employee benefits offered. Once adequate survey responses have been entered, LMIC will be tabulating and analyzing the data, hopefully publishing results in early 2019.
