The Department of Labor and Regulation asserts that an educated workforce and citizenry are essential to South Dakota. The Adult Education and Literacy Program, under Title II of the Workforce Investment Act of 1998, supports services and activities to
- assist adults to become literate and obtain the knowledge and skills necessary for employment and self-sufficiency;
- assist adults who are parents to obtain the educational skills necessary to become full partners in the educational development of their children; and
- assist adults in the completion of a secondary school education. (Public Law 105-220; ยง202)
The Adult Education and Literacy Program emphasizes skills such as reading, writing, numeracy, financial literacy, English language competency, problem-solving, health literacy and family literacy. These skills bolster workplace readiness, transitions to post-secondary education and a higher quality of life for South Dakotans.
