Older Americans Month

This May marks the 50th anniversary for Older Americans Month, a time to remember, honor and celebrate those 65 years and older in our communities. It is a time to recognize contributions of older persons, past and present, in the United States.

The 2010 decennial census revealed 14.3 percent of South Dakota's population was 65 years or older. According to medium series projections by the South Dakota State University (SDSU) Rural Life and Census Data Center, older South Dakotans will account for 23.2 percent of the state's population by 2035.

The infographic below concentrates on one group of older Americans: those in South Dakota's workforce.
